My favourite quote of the moment is James Joyce’s line from the Dubliners “Mr Duffy lived a short distance from his body.” Firstly, because it makes me laugh, and secondly, because it makes me laugh with that wry tragicomic humour I rather enjoy, recognising how true it used to be for me and most of the people I grew up around.
We can spend an inordinate amount of energy avoiding feeling things in the fear it’ll be unpleasant, even unbearable, if we do, not realising the consequences of blocking what we feel will find another outlet in aches and pains and more serious ill-health or seemingly unrelated outbursts of anger, stress, or depression, anxiety, burnout and a general disenchantment with all aspects of life.
Whereas if you let yourself really feel what you are dreading and avoiding feeling, even the most desperate moments pass within 10-20 minutes tops. I know I’ve timed it!
Coaching is a perfect place to explore those feelings you’re dodging or suppressing, and to uncover what you’d really like in your life instead, so that you can begin to enjoy each day again, with increased energy, better relationships with family, friends, and colleagues, improved health and avoiding burnout.
